Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

What is an “Icon”?

A.

Icons are visual compilations that communicate status of a device or capability. In the IP Networking space, Icons:

  • Feature the device or capability near the center of the Icon
  • Surround this focal point with the visual components that influence its status
  • Convey status of each component using algorithms selected by the customer and standard traffic light colors: red, yellow, green
  • Use color to reflect the condition of the focal point device or capability
  • Update themselves at regular predetermined intervals to reflect their most recent status
  • Contain supplemental information that is useful with respect to location, name, technical support, contact information, etc., often accessed through “hot corners”

Q.

What are the different things that this solution can monitor?

A.

Because each application is custom developed, Icons can be created for any application. IP Networking Icons can be created for routers, servers, media connections, airports, fleets, networks, campuses, and more.

Q.

Can I change the things that this solution monitors?

A.

It is easy to add additional items to generate an Icon for this new device or capability. The layout of the Icon can be modified to meet changing conditions; however, this may incur an additional charge. Also, you can change the level of viewing permissions so that different people can see different classifications of Icons.

Q.

Where do you get the data to build and refresh the Icons?

A.

The good news is that the data will be usable in it's current format. (There will be no need to format it in a way to satisfy our needs we take it just as it is!)

In addition, these copies of the relevant data can be collected in a variety of ways:

  • Pushing, pulling or mirroring a database
  • Accessing a spreadsheet
  • Launching a web crawler that mimics human retrieval methods
  • A discovery device installed within the firewalled environment

The data element copies are collected at intervals according to customer preferences – ranging from every 30 seconds to 15 minutes. Because these are constructed using copies of data elements in their original formats, running on a remote SaaS Icon generator, and viewed on a secure portal, there is no interference with current software within the customer’s environment.

Q.

What additional hardware is required?

A.

No additional hardware is required. Some customers opt to display the Icons on a large display in a NOC or operations center. Other customers opt to collect data using an in-network polling or discovery device. In both instances, these are optional devices.

Q.

Which devices can view the Icons?

A.

The Icons are viewed on a portal that is accessed by authorized personnel with proper credentials. Most browsers can access the Icon portal from a wide variety of PCs, Macs, smart phones or Linux devices.

Q.

How can Icons save us money?

A.

Depending on how customers use Icons, they can improve profitability:

    Improved efficiency

  • Fewer catastrophic failures because staff can diagnose faster and more accurately
  • Better management with less technically inclined staff can improve the cost base
  • Streamlined process (less drilling and checking) to quickly identify the “next best thing to do”
  • Empowering non-technical staff

  • Sharing insight with staff who face the customers
  • Informing non-technical management with revenue responsibility
  • New services for their existing customers

  • Improved differentiation of their offerings to customers by sharing ready-to-consume Icon information
  • Incremental margins from existing customers
